Hunar - Art ÷ Conflict is an exhibition and a three day conference delivered online and in person. With a focus on bringing together theorists and practitioners, in person and online, Hunar will bring minds together from academia and arts, working on and responding to conflict spaces.
The 2022 conference will explore the utility and inherent value of cultural products in places that have experienced conflict, crisis and colonisation - both contemporaneously and in the past. In an era when the arts and culture have suffered disproportionately, projects like this are crucial for our societies.
Objectives
- Create a space of discourse in which nuanced and considered discourse about the employment of art in societies which have experienced current or past trauma through war, violence or conflict are explored.
- Create an international network of theorists and practitioners who can support each other
- Elevate the profile of local artists and the role of arts more generally to local and global communities.
- Archive, through publication, the current social and political moment and arts’ response.
There will be three key components:
- A three day conference: the conference will see papers presented by academics and artists. By providing an online option, the conference can be a) agile to global Covid responses, b) invite a global audience c) invite speakers from around the world d) incorporate collaborations from international artists and academics. The three day conference will include a series of workshops in which wicked problems that emerge through the presentations will be further fleshed out.
- Exhibition: An exhibition will run alongside the conference. The exhibition will provide an opportunity for artists to collaborate across borders and to showcase their art practice. Artists are encouraged to consider new and innovative ways to collaborate with each other to produce works across borders.
- Publication: Papers presented at the conference and papers which emerge from the workshops will be compiled into a peer reviewed publication or edited book. The publication will allow academics to showcase their research and to collaborate with artists to produce publishable works.
