Art/conflict

The curatorial team are led by artists and educator Zeina Iaali and Manchester based academic Dr Chrisoula Lionis. The team are comprised of legal expert Sofia Yiannikas and Sydney based academic Dr Kate Sands. By reaching out to local and global networks of artists responding to conflict, crisis and colonisation, we collected a diverse and broad range of works, including poster art and audiovisual works created for its reproducibility, to photographic art responding to themes of disappearance, censorship and collectives, to name a few. 

The curatorial approach encompassed a ground up, inductive methodology. That is, we were curious to understand the themes that emerged from the creative responses, rather than impose curatorial themes. As a result, we have been able to curate three exhibitions, with three themes, each of which also capture the histories of the locations they will be representing. The themes are: 

• Disappearance and right to authorship and archive
• Circulation and reproducibility 
• Home, host and transitions 

Overarching these themes, we are interested in working with collectives of collectives - movements coming together in abundance, not in competition.
